Sayyid al-Istighfar (master of asking forgiveness)

O Allah, You are my Lord, none has the right to be worshipped except You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I keep Your covenant and pledge as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You all the favours You have bestowed on me, and I acknowledge my sins, so forgive me — for none can forgive sins but You.

Frequently asked

What is a dua?
A dua (دعاء) is a personal supplication or prayer to Allah — distinct from the obligatory ritual prayer (salah). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Dua is the essence of worship" (Tirmidhi). It can be made in any language, at any time, in any state.
Are these duas authentic?
Yes. Every dua on this page is sourced from authentic narrations — primarily Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Tirmidhi — and compiled in classical works like Hisnul Muslim (Fortress of the Muslim) by Sa’id bin Ali al-Qahtani.
When should I recite morning and evening azkar?
The morning azkar are recited after Fajr until sunrise (or up to noon if missed). The evening azkar are recited after Asr until sunset (or up to a few hours after Maghrib). Recite once or three times depending on the specific dhikr — see each dua’s note.
Do I need to recite duas in Arabic?
Quranic duas should be recited in Arabic when possible, as the words are themselves revelation. Other duas can be made in any language — Allah understands every tongue. Many Muslims memorise the Arabic alongside the meaning so they can absorb the rhythm and depth of the original.
What is Sayyid al-Istighfar?
Sayyid al-Istighfar ("the master of asking forgiveness") is the most comprehensive dua for seeking pardon, taught by the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet said whoever recites it during the day with conviction and dies that day will enter Paradise — and likewise at night (Bukhari).
How do I make my own dua?
Begin by praising Allah (Alhamdulillah, Allahumma) and sending salutations on the Prophet ﷺ, then ask in your own words. Common etiquette: face the Qibla, raise your hands, ask with sincerity and certainty, and end with "Ameen". Times of acceptance include the last third of the night, between adhan and iqamah, and during sujood.
